I was driving down a dark back road tonight and thought I saw the strangest looking deer-like animal ever. It freaked me out. I thought it was going to walk into the road, in front of my car. But it was creepy because it’s body was twisted funny even though it looked like it was standing up like a normal deer would. It was super thin, and pale. And then I realized it was just two mailboxes on poles that were positioned funny, so when my headlights his them, they looked like a weird creature coming out of the shadows.
But it made me wonder why seeing a strange animal would freak me out. It might be dangerous … but if it’s similar to a deer, it probably isn’t. But it looked so weird, and I didn’t understand what it was.
Lots of things I don’t understand scare me. The unknown scares me. And I’m sure lots of people are like that, but I really wonder why.
Today’s lesson: Something new and strange, whether an object or an animal or a concept, ought to be an opportunity for learning, not an opportunity to get confused and scared.

I’m glad I do not live in a place where this sort of thing could even happen. Very scary indeed.

What’s even better is that the very next night, I encountered two very real deer, and almost had a collision with them. Even scarier!
