I’m in the process of moving to the home that my fiancee and I will eventually share. It’s part of what used to be a veterinary office, but has been converted to our apartment on one side and some kind of office or workshop on the other side that our landlords use. There are trees all around, the house is set back from the busy road a bit, there is a back yard and a great view of the sunset when you look out the window. The floors are hardwood, the kitchen is sizable, and we’re allowed to have pets.
But it’s a tiny space for two people with lots of stuff, which is what we are. Piano, big screen TV, large oak bedroom set … and a gigantic desk that I proudly got from Pier 1 on sale last summer.
The desk (technically a worktable) is so gigantic that I didn’t think it would be prudent to try to fit into this little living space. And really, did I need it? Couldn’t I do my writing in bed with my laptop, or at the kitchen table, or at Panera? Of course I could. Didn’t Steven King used to do a lot of his writing on a typewriter in the laundry room? But at the same time, I know it won’t happen. Even now, my desk is covered up with a quilt I’m working on, and I haven’t used it for writing lately. Maybe moving into this new place is my chance to get back on track, to create order in my life. Maybe I could even have a regular writing schedule, where I sit at my desk every day and hammer something out either on my laptop or my typewriter.
The thought is so exciting, and the desire for my desk so strong, that my fiancee and I decided to take it along. (Oh my … I typed that sentence and read over it just now and realized it rhymes …).
