“You want the moon? Just say the word, and I’ll throw a lasso around it and pull it down. Hey, that’s a pretty good idea. I’ll give you the moon.”
– It’s a Wonderful Life
There’s something in human nature that wants reassurance and certainty. Otherwise, we wouldn’t make promises. How often do you make someone a promise? “I’ll be there by 10:00, I promise.” “I promise I won’t do it again.” “I promise that it’ll be okay.”
Is there a point when reassurance goes too far? Do you find yourself making promises just to keep someone calm and content? Do you make promises you can’t keep?
Granted, if someone promised me the moon while we were strolling hand in hand down a shadowy evening path scented with roses, I might not get all up on their case about to being able fulfill the promise. It’s a super nice thing to say. But at the same time, there comes a point when it’s necessary to be realistic, not pacifying with empty promises. “Yeah, it might not be okay. I can’t promise that it will be.”
