The Back Page is where the feet go up on the desk at the end of the day. It’s that good book with a mug of hot cocoa just before bed. It’s where we goof off after a hard day’s work. The Back Page is our blog.

Encouragement?

“If a thing is worth doing, it’s worth doing badly.”

- William S. Burroughs

What does this mean?

Hard to say, Lindsey. Old Bill Lee said a lot of odd things, most of which he made up by flipping them all around on purpose. I wrote to William S. Burroughs when I was in my early twenties. To my surprise, he sent back a post card. I’d asked, “Who are you? Who are you really?”

    His reply?

“Who am I? I am the cat who walks in the night and to me all supermarkets are alike.”

I just hope he was being straight in the quote above because I’m really good at doing things badly.

I think it means that if something is worth doing, then do it. It doesn’t matter if it is done poorly or not. If you never try something, what good is it to you? If its worth it, do it, and then you can reap the benefits. If you do something badly the first time, you can go back the second time and fix it with the experience under your belt. We learn from our mistakes, thats why they are OK to make!

Jamie, that’s really interesting. I don’t know much about him, but he sounds intriguing … I’ll have to check out some of his other writing; it will probably give me a better idea about what he means.

It’s always better to work hard in achieving a certain goal even if the outcome is unsatisfying, than to not work hard and have regrets later.

Sometimes the truth is
Not what you want it to be.
Is it ever what you expected?
No, probably not.
Are you okay with that?
Are we meant to create truth or
Are we meant to find it?
