Our likes and dislikes say something about ourselves just as how we handle individual situations reveal pieces of our character.
Imagine yourself in comic strip form.
Try to picture yourself from an outsider’s view. Does this make you laugh? Now consider the time you threw a plate when you burnt the toast. We can provide humor for ourselves when we allow ourselves to laugh at things we have done.
Enlarge your frame of mind.
Use this humorous perspective of yourself t0 envision something you might do, speculated off of prior actions and behaviors. Consider how you respond to new environments or things you don’t particularly like.
Apply this to a character.
Now you are beginning to create characters. Characters in pieces of writing are allowed to have bits of the writers- no one will know, as long as you don’t make it too obvious.
Get to know your new characters:
Don’t be afraid to ask questions about this person. Who is he/she exactly?
Where is his/her favorite place in the whole world?
Where is the one place he/she would like to visit?
What is it about his/her personality that people disdain or adore?
What in her past has made him/her out to be this anal about rose gardens?
Where exactly did he/she get those debilitating fears?
Let your mind roam free, please.
Try on different perspectives about yourself. When you can see yourself through other’s eyes, then you can formulate a new person through your own eyes also.
Happy Writing!
