Where the Mind Sprocket staff writes about inspiration, communication, culture, storytelling, and more.

The Back Page is where the feet go up on the desk at the end of the day. It’s that good book with a mug of hot cocoa just before bed. It’s where we goof off after a hard day’s work. The Back Page is our blog.

The Academic Rut

by Lindsey Anderson on May 14, 2008

I finished reading “Toilers of the Sea” by Victor Hugo this past weekend. I started reading it the day after Christmas.
Sadly, I no longer consider myself an avid reader, having left such luxuries in the past along with home cooked meals from my mom and study hall periods in high school. And so instead of […]

A Wonderful Something Lurks in the Shadows…

by Edward Atkinson on May 13, 2008

The Mind Sprocket editorial staff is officially at full steam. We’ve tried to slow down, but we can’t. The idea we hit upon is infectious, and we can’t get away from it. We’re trying to contain ourselves, and we may succeed for a few more weeks.
But be on the look out.
Something big, […]

Letters

by Jacqueline on May 12, 2008

So it’s becoming clear that our society has moved away from sending physical letters through what the online world as deemed as “snail mail.”
Why send a letter? By the time the mail arrives, what we’ve said, all the latest happenings, could have been said in a phone call, an e-mail, a Facebook message, an […]

A Mother Feeds

by Jacqueline on May 11, 2008

My creativity
comes in
a direct flow
from my mother.
Her blood feeds
my body with
oxygen to breathe
and her words,
like breadth for my ears.
An umbilical cord once
attached us
before I was
strong enough
to be my own.
Now our
thoughts and
hearts
align
because I am borrowed
from her clay.
It seems that we are
always attached to
the other end of
our life support.

Sometimes Bad Is Good

by Lindsey Anderson on May 10, 2008

Traditionally, we’ve been taught that improvement is a good thing and that being awesome at what we do is important. But geez, that can get old after a while. Thankfully, the Museum Of Bad Art (MOBA) in Boston takes a different approach, displaying and celebrating some of the worst art they can find. What an inspiration […]

Somebody else tells stories too!

by Edward Atkinson on May 9, 2008

Thanks to Jamie of How Not To Write, I stumbled across an innovative twist on story telling, done by Penguin Books, under the same name as Mind Sprocket’s tagline: We Tell Stories.
There’s a neat story told through a progressively unfolding Google map, an interactive fairy tale (neat!), and more.
This is one of the better executions […]

Rain, Rain, Come Again Soon!

by Jacqueline on May 7, 2008

Have you ever looked out the window on a rainy day and exclaimed, “Wow! What a beautiful day!” ? I have yet to hear someone say that while everyone treks around with umbrellas and plastic boots, hoping to protect recently blow-dried hair and favorite jeans.
Most of us say, “Eww, how depressing. It’s raining.”  Or something […]

How to Formulate a Battle Plan

by Lindsey Anderson on May 7, 2008

This can work in business, in planning a road trip or a fun summer, a wedding, a party,  or anything involving multiple people and many details that can seem overwhelming.
1. Look at the big picture. Write down your Ultimate Big Goal.
2. Break the big picture into smaller sections, or smaller goals. Write them down, too.
3. Analyze […]

Illusions

by Jacqueline on May 5, 2008

Material goods give the illusion that we are in control. We further remove ourselves from reality when we control our surroundings through such things as managing building temperatures and lighting. We shut the blinds to block out natural light, maybe to avoid glares on screens, for example. We shut out the natural […]

Getting it Together

by Lindsey Anderson on May 3, 2008

Dear readers,
As you may have noticed, posts in the The Back Page have been scarce this past week. That’s because members of the Mind Sprocket staff have been taking finals, moving into new apartments, moving into old apartments, and one of them is in the midst of being a semi-professional singer daily for two weeks.
We do apologize […]

Sometimes the truth is
Not what you want it to be.
Is it ever what you expected?
No, probably not.
Are you okay with that?
Are we meant to create truth or
Are we meant to find it?
