Why do you write?

May 29, 2008 — by Jacqueline

I recently came across the quotation:

Reading is about not being content with the surface.

If we read to dig under the surface, then why do we write? Surely some of us have taken the time to analyze why we write. Even after much analysis, though, we still might not have any insight into our motivations for writing. Some of us just understand that writing is like breathing.  For some, it’s a requirement to fully living.

If we read to know more, to drink the words off the pages, then we write to explore and create.

Even though we may not understand our motivations for writing at the moment we write, we can at least find solace in the idea that we’re giving others a shovel to dig beyond the surface and observe each minuscule mineral in the dirt.

And even if we always knew why we write, would that change the fact that we still view writing as part of survival?

Maybe some need to write because others need to read.

While writers feed themselves in the process, writers also feed others:  the readers.

Sometimes the truth is
Not what you want it to be.
Is it ever what you expected?
No, probably not.
Are you okay with that?
Are we meant to create truth or
Are we meant to find it?
