The Back Page is where the feet go up on the desk at the end of the day. It’s that good book with a mug of hot cocoa just before bed. It’s where we goof off after a hard day’s work. The Back Page is our blog.

This past weekend, a dear companion and I drove to Georgia from Maryland. We had to entertain ourselves for roughly 11 hours in my Honda Civic. The weather was neither warm nor bright on the way down or back, and our spirits, though not in poor condition, were not in the cheeriest of conditions either.

1. Bring all the music you have in the world, including new playlists or CDs made specifically for the occasion.

2. Pick a type of billboard that seems to be recurring and keep a tally of how many times you see it. For example, we counted over 20 Cracker Barrel billboards between Georgia and Maryland.

3. Read horror stories aloud. (H.P. Lovecraft was our author of choice.) Really, any short stories will do for a long car ride, so, try Grimm’s Fairy Tales or short stories by  Mark Twain.

4. Read a trashy romance novel aloud. Our romance of choice, Prince of Pleasure, came from a Food Lion in North Carolina. The absurdity of the writing, the lack of plot, and dialogue that was both redundant and ridiculous makes reading a trashy romance novel both a pleasure and a pain. In what other book can you find such a strong dichotomy that will keep you interested and awake for longer than any of the above methods can?

Does anyone else have strange things they do to stay awake and amused on a long road trip?

There is a game that will make the trip go by much, much faster. One person starts to make up a story, then leaves off in the middle of a sentence. The next person finishes the sentence, and continues, leaving off in the middle of that sentence, and so on, until some unpopular person ends it. It is very amusing if you have creative friends.

I’ve done something similar to that, only without stopping in the middle of the sentence…your way sounds like it will make for some more interesting twists. Thanks!

I like to engage in conversation with my imaginary friends during long trips. The constant talking keeps me going. :)

Sometimes the truth is
Not what you want it to be.
Is it ever what you expected?
No, probably not.
Are you okay with that?
Are we meant to create truth or
Are we meant to find it?
