Where the Mind Sprocket staff writes about inspiration, communication, culture, storytelling, and more.

The Back Page is where the feet go up on the desk at the end of the day. It’s that good book with a mug of hot cocoa just before bed. It’s where we goof off after a hard day’s work. The Back Page is our blog.

When Words Refuse Us.

March 19, 2008 — by Jacqueline

georgetown2.jpgI noticed that my ink well has dried up for the past week. Do other writers experience this? The idea that what we write comes from another realm, as if we don’t have control over what graces the pages of our beloved notebooks? When the ink refuses to fl ow from my pen, I fill up on other creative activities instead. I indulge in my favorite authors and magazines. I make collages and sometimes practice a pinch of photo-editing. Sometimes I do these activities with the hope that they are filling up my back burner. A few days later my writing will come back to me, mostly because I found inspiration (without knowing it) in the creative outlets I chose days beforehand.

When words won’t come to me, I go to the words someone else has written.

If words fail you, just remember: Stay calm. Don’t beat your head against the desk.

Do one of these instead:

Read excerpts from a book off the shelf.

Make a collage from random items you find throughout the day.

Color in a coloring book.

Go outside and take pictures of objects from angles you don’t normally try.

Try a new recipe.

Listen to a new song artist. Pay close attention to the lyrics or patterns.

  1. Mind Sprocket: The Back Page : On Getting Ideas pinged this post:

[…] I’m sure most of us have heard that it’s good to try something new, or else we lose the bit of creative spunk necessary to create great things. (If you are one of the people who has not heard this, I encourage you to read yesterday’s post.) […]

Sometimes the truth is
Not what you want it to be.
Is it ever what you expected?
No, probably not.
Are you okay with that?
Are we meant to create truth or
Are we meant to find it?
