Where the Mind Sprocket staff writes about inspiration, communication, culture, storytelling, and more.

The Back Page is where the feet go up on the desk at the end of the day. It’s that good book with a mug of hot cocoa just before bed. It’s where we goof off after a hard day’s work. The Back Page is our blog.

Hire Snapshot Animations. That’s what we did, and we’ve just kicked butt. Check it out!

Snapshot Animations is a small stop-animation shop run by my brother Peter. We’re eternally grateful to Peter for his hard work and production.

The music is courtesy of Lane Gardner as Artey Kang. We chose his music for two reasons: (1) it’s awesome and catchy and (2) it tells a story. Two ingredients in the recipe of kick-butt-ness.

We dig this video and we hope you do too!

A few post-production notes

  • Mind Sprocket was conceived almost exactly as portrayed: three friends bumming at a table conversing, sketching, and brainstorming until the idea hit us in the thought bubble.
  • We love what Peter did with the cogs. It’s clever and layered with meanings.
  • Nobody caught this until after shooting had wrapped up: in all the shots, the front cover of the magazine (with ‘MS’ on it) is actually on the back cover! (We’re that unique!)
  • When doing creative brainstorming and the idea suddenly hits: you really do have to leap out there and grab it out of the air. You’ve got to scribble as fast as you can and get it out of the ethereal and onto paper.

Thinking back to the three founding editors (myself, Lindsey Anderson, and Anna Luther) two years back is almost scary. We’ve come light years and leapfrogs since then. But considering where we want to be, we’re hardly an inch off the ground.

Mrs. B.: Thank you for your kind words! We are nothing if we don’t reach people, and to know that we do means a lot.

Wow. Mind Sprocket has come away. When we started that commercial Mind Sprocket was in formation, the Back Page not yet realized and everything still settling, like concrete hardening, the vague shape in your mind but the final product ever evolving. I’m happy to have worked with such creative and organized people and would encourage any person that can to jump at the opportunity. It’s been fun.

    Thanks!

Sometimes the truth is
Not what you want it to be.
Is it ever what you expected?
No, probably not.
Are you okay with that?
Are we meant to create truth or
Are we meant to find it?
