A Woman Kneeling
by Jeremy Kiskadden

Once there were no such things
as cathedrals.
Only a woman kneeling, hands
together, begging
water from the stream.
And that was prayer enough.
In that gesture,
quietly she praised both star and
shade-tree, with her
hands cupped, wet and thankful.
Every motion had a mouth to sing
a psalm for what hides in the brush.
